Arcade Volleyball came out in 1988 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series, developed by Mirage Graphics. It was a simple, straightforward sports game from an era when many titles focused on clear mechanics over elaborate presentation. You got exactly what the name promised, no more and no less.
You control one of two blocky players on a single screen court, moving left and right to position yourself under the ball. The main objective is to volley the ball back and forth, trying to make it land on your opponent's side of the net. Key mechanics include timing your jumps to hit the ball at the peak of its arc for a stronger return, and angling your shots by moving just before contact. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty ramps up quickly as the AI opponent rarely misses an easy shot. It feels like a pure test of reflexes and anticipation, where every point is earned through quick decisions.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
