Game Overview

I first played Arkanoid on the NES in 1986, a port of Taito's arcade game. It was a straightforward, focused experience among the platform's many action titles, a game about clearing screens of bricks with a ball and paddle. The presentation was simple, the goal clear, and it fit right in with the era's direct, no-frills design philosophy.

You control the Vaus, a small paddle spacecraft at the bottom of the screen, moving it left and right to deflect a single ball. The objective is to destroy every brick on each stage by bouncing the ball into them, while preventing it from falling past your paddle. Key mechanics include catching power-up capsules that drop from broken bricks; these grant abilities like expanding your paddle, multiplying the number of balls in play, or firing lasers. The game progresses screen by screen, with boss encounters every few stages, and the pacing is relentless, demanding quick reflexes and precise angles. It feels tense and satisfying, a pure test of coordination and focus.
