Game Overview

I first played Arkanoid on the NES back in the late 80s, a home port of Taito's arcade game from 1986. It was a familiar concept for the time, a clear evolution of Breakout, but it felt more alive and polished than its predecessors. The NES library was full of straightforward action games, and this one fit right in, offering a focused, almost hypnotic experience.

You control the Vaus, a small ship that acts as a paddle, moving it left and right along the bottom of the screen to deflect a single ball. Your objective is to clear each stage by using the ball to destroy every colored brick arranged in patterns above you. The signature mechanics are the power-up capsules that drop from broken bricks; you must catch these to gain temporary abilities like expanding your paddle's size, firing lasers, or even grabbing the ball to aim your next shot manually. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty ramps up quickly with bricks that take multiple hits and stages that introduce tricky angles and obstacles. It feels intensely satisfying to get into a rhythm, clearing screens and desperately trying to keep the ball in play.
