Asterix: The Power of the Gods came out for the Sega Genesis in 1995, developed by Core Design. It was part of that wave of licensed platformers that tried to capture the spirit of a franchise, in this case the beloved Gaulish comics. The game arrived late in the console's life, when developers were really pushing the hardware to its limits.

You control Asterix, moving screen by screen through levels set across ancient Gaul and beyond. Your main goal is to rescue kidnapped villagers from the Romans, which involves a lot of exploration, combat with your sword, and solving environmental puzzles. A couple of the key mechanics are finding and using special potions; one turns you super strong for a short time, and another lets you breathe fire. Obelix joins you occasionally as an AI partner, plowing through enemies and obstacles you can't handle alone. The pacing is deliberate, with some tricky enemy placements and leaps that demand precision. It feels like a solid, if sometimes unforgiving, adventure that captures the look and humor of its source material.
