Game Overview

Balloon Kid came out for the Game Boy in 1990, developed by Nintendo R&D1. It was part of that early wave of portable games, simple in concept but built around a single, clever idea. You don't see many games built entirely around floating, but this one commits to it completely.

You control a little kid holding a bunch of balloons, navigating a series of side-scrolling levels. The main goal is to rescue your brother, who's also been carried away by his own balloons. You tap the A button to ascend and must manage your height carefully; hit the spiked ceilings and you pop. Enemies like birds will try to knock you down, and some screens auto-scroll, forcing you to keep moving. The pacing is deliberate, almost tense, because a single mistake means starting the section over. It feels surprisingly precarious for such a cheerful-looking game, a constant battle against gravity and your own timing.
