Barbarian came out in 1987 for MS-DOS, published by Psygnosis. It was one of those games you'd see on a friend's monitor, a stark, gritty contrast to the brighter fantasy adventures of the time. The graphics were detailed for the era, with a dark palette that suited its violent premise perfectly.

You control a lone warrior navigating a side-scrolling labyrinth, screen by screen. Your goal is to rescue a princess from a dragon's lair, but the real challenge is surviving the gauntlet of enemy fighters and environmental traps. Combat is deliberate; you swing your sword or axe with careful timing, blocking and waiting for an opening. One well-placed hit can decapitate your foe (or you), making every encounter tense. The pacing is methodical, and the difficulty is unforgiving. It feels brutal and consequential, where every victory is earned through precision and patience.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
