Bolo Adventures I is one of those weird little MS-DOS games that somehow sticks with you—like, you boot it up expecting something forgettable, and suddenly it's 2 AM and you're muttering at the screen because some pixelated enemy just wrecked your run again.
You control this tiny tank (or is it a robot? Honestly, the manual's unclear) through these maze-like levels, dodging fireballs and outmaneuvering enemies that seem to spawn out of nowhere. The controls are stupidly simple—arrow keys and one action button—but the levels get devious fast. One minute you're breezing through, the next you're trapped between falling boulders and a laser turret. Classic '80s cruelty.
It feels like someone mashed up Boulder Dash and an arcade shooter, but with this janky, endearing charm. The graphics are basic even for DOS, but the gameplay's weirdly tight—every death feels like your fault, not the game's. Perfect for when you want something quick but punishing, or just need a hit of that old-school "how did kids beat this without save states?" frustration.
Also, the soundtrack is a single chiptune loop that will either haunt your dreams or become your new productivity anthem. No in-between.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
