Bonze Adventure came out in 1988 as an arcade game from Taito. It was part of that era where side-scrolling action games were common, but it had a unique style that made it stand out without trying to be flashy. You played as a small Buddhist monk, which wasn't exactly a typical hero for the time.

You control the monk through a series of side-scrolling stages, using a bubble attack to trap enemies. Once an enemy is caught in a bubble, you can pop it to defeat them, but timing is key; if you wait too long, the bubble shrinks and the enemy escapes. You also collect power-ups, like a bell that summons a helper, and navigate platforms while avoiding various creatures. The pacing is methodical, requiring careful aim and patience rather than speed. It feels oddly satisfying to trap a row of foes and clear the screen with a well-timed pop.
