One minute you're flooring it in an armored car, the next you're weaving through bullets in a plane—this NES oddball keeps switching the rules mid-game. That soundtrack's still stuck in my head years later.

Break Thru is a 1986 Nintendo Entertainment System game developed by Data East. It arrived during a period when many developers were experimenting with hybrid genres, and it fits right into that curious, transitional phase of the NES library. The game doesn't settle into one identity, which makes it a memorable, if somewhat disjointed, experience from that era.
You control a special operations driver, and later a pilot, across two distinct gameplay halves. The first part is a top-down car chase where you must ram enemy vehicles off the road while avoiding their attacks and navigating tight, obstacle-filled highways. After a successful chase, the perspective shifts to a side-scrolling shooter where you pilot a plane, dodging enemy fire and destroying targets to clear a path. The objective is straightforward: complete both stages to finish a mission. The constant shift in perspective and mechanics keeps you on your toes, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly, especially during the precise dodging required in the shooter segments. It feels like managing two different games in one, and pulling off a clean run provides a genuine sense of accomplishment.
