Play Breakout - Breakaway IV Online
You smack a tiny ball at bricks until it’s ricocheting like mad, and suddenly you’re sweating over pixel-perfect paddle flicks while the Atari chirps at your failures.
Breakout - Breakaway IV came out for the Atari 2600 in 1978, published by Atari itself. It was one of those early arcade-style games that felt right at home on the system, simple in concept but built for replay. You saw a lot of games like this back then, focused on a single clear idea rather than sprawling worlds or complex stories.
You control a small paddle at the bottom of the screen, moving it left and right to bounce a ball upward into a wall of colored bricks. The goal is to break every brick without letting the ball fall past your paddle. Each time the ball hits a brick, that brick disappears; if you miss the ball, you lose a life. The ball speeds up as you clear more bricks, and the angle of rebound changes depending on where it strikes your paddle, adding a layer of strategy to your movements. The game moves quickly once you get going, and the difficulty ramps up in a way that keeps you focused. It feels satisfying to find a rhythm and watch the bricks vanish row by row.
