Game Overview

California Games II came out on the Amiga in 1990, published by U.S. Gold. It was part of that wave of sports compilations that tried to capture the feeling of a day at the beach or the mountains, a common theme for games of that era. You got five events to play through: hang-gliding, jetski racing, skateboarding, body boarding, and snow boarding. It was a straightforward sequel, building on the original's concept with new events.

You control an athlete in each event, using the joystick to perform specific tricks and maneuvers. The main objective is to score points by successfully completing runs or races, trying to beat your previous best or a friend's high score. Key mechanics include timing your button presses for tricks during a skateboard run and steering to navigate waves on a body board. The pacing is generally quick, with short bursts of action per event, though some events like hang-gliding can feel a bit unforgiving with their control sensitivity. It feels like a lighthearted, sometimes finicky, afternoon of arcade sports.
