Hang gliding turns into cliff-crashing simulator, jet skiing feels like wrestling a wave, and snowboarding punishes every failed trick with a brutal ragdoll tumble. Same chaotic charm, just more ways to spectacularly eat dirt.

Game Overview

California Games II came out for the Super Nintendo in 1993, developed and published by Epyx. It was part of that wave of sports compilations that tried to capture the laid back, sun soaked vibe of California, a familiar theme on 16 bit consoles at the time.

You control an athlete across six different events, including hang gliding, jet skiing, and snowboarding. The main goal is to score points by performing tricks and completing courses within time limits. Signature mechanics include timing button presses for tricks during a hang glide flight and balancing your skier to avoid wiping out on a half pipe. The pacing is generally quick, but the difficulty can spike unexpectedly, especially in events requiring precise timing. It feels like a mix of genuine accomplishment and comical failure, often within seconds of each other.
