California Games was basically the 80s version of the X-Games before that was even a thing. You pick your events—skateboarding, BMX, surfing, footbag (which is way harder than it looks), and a few others depending on which version you're playing. The Amiga one has everything, but some consoles cut a couple events.

Surfing's my favorite because it’s not just about speed—you’ve got to pull off tricks while judges score you. The controls take a minute to get used to, especially the footbag timing, but once you nail a perfect BMX run or a smooth skateboard halfpipe combo, it feels awesome. Just don’t expect ultra-realistic physics—this is pure arcade-style fun with that classic pixelated charm.

Oh, and in some versions, you even pick sponsors, which is a nice touch if you’re into that old-school extreme sports vibe. The Genesis version’s missing frisbee, but honestly, you won’t miss it much.
