Game Overview

College Football's National Championship II is basically the same game as its predecessor—same engine, same Joe Montana-esque gameplay—just with a few tweaks. If you played the first one, you already know what to expect: Exhibition, Tournament, and Season modes, plus updated 1994 rosters. They swapped out five schools (sorry, LSU fans) for five new ones like Wisconsin and Oregon, which honestly doesn’t change much unless you had a deep attachment to San Diego State.

The stats tracking is solid—19 different categories, plus playbooks that actually match each team’s style. And thank goodness for the battery backup; no more scribbling down stats on a notepad like some kind of football archaeologist. The announcer got cut, which is either a relief or a bummer depending on how much you liked his commentary. Oh, and if you’ve got three friends and a multi-tap, you can all yell at each other in four-player mode. It’s exactly what you’d expect from a mid-’90s Sega Genesis football game—nothing revolutionary, but decent fun if you’re into that era’s janky sports sims.
