Game Overview

Columns came out for the Sega Genesis in 1990, developed and published by Sega. It was one of those early puzzle games on the system, arriving around the same time as titles like Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, offering a different kind of tile-matching challenge. It didn't have the same immediate recognition as some other puzzle hits, but it found its audience through simple, focused mechanics.

You control falling columns of three colored gems, rotating them to align colors vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. The goal is to clear gems from the screen by matching three or more of the same color in a row, which causes them to disappear and makes everything above drop down. The game's pace starts slow but steadily increases, and the real tension comes from trying to set up chain reactions as the stack climbs higher. It feels methodical and tense, especially when you're carefully setting up a big collapse while new pieces keep raining down.
