Game Overview

Columns VGA came out in 1990 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series, published by SEGA. It was one of those straightforward puzzle games you'd load up after school, a solid time-killer in an era when PC gaming was still finding its feet. It didn't try to be flashy; it just did its job well, offering a clean, colorful alternative to other block-droppers of the time.

You control the descent of groups of three colored gems, rotating them to create vertical, horizontal, or diagonal lines of three or more matching colors. The main objective is to prevent the stack from reaching the top of the playfield. Key mechanics include the ability to swap the order of the falling gems and a special flash gem that clears all gems of one color when matched. The pace starts deceptively slow but quickly demands faster decisions, especially in later stages. It feels satisfying to set off a long chain reaction and watch the screen clear up just when things look hopeless.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
