Drop and swap gems before gravity stacks 'em too high—those chunky pixels shatter just right when you pull off a slick combo. The music speeds up like it's laughing at your panic.

Beyond Columns was part of the MS-DOS Classic Games collection, a release that bundled several titles without a specific number assigned. It was developed by Sega, originally for their System C arcade hardware, and later ported to home computers. In the context of early 90s DOS gaming, it stood as a competent puzzle entry, building on the familiar match-three concept with a few twists of its own.
You control the flow of falling gem pairs, rotating them to align three or more of the same color either horizontally or vertically. The main objective is to prevent the stack of gems from reaching the top of the playfield. Key mechanics include the ability to swap the positions of the two gems currently in play before they lock into place, and triggering cascading matches that clear multiple groups at once. The pace is methodical at first but becomes insistent as the column of gems climbs higher, demanding quicker decisions. It feels like a calm test of spatial planning that slowly tightens into a race against the inevitable crush.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
