Conan: The Cimmerian came out in 1991 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series, developed by Synergistic Software. It was a side-scrolling action game from an era when sword and sorcery themes were common, but few let you step directly into the boots of Robert E. Howard’s barbarian. The graphics were chunky, the colors were bold, and it ran on machines that are museum pieces now.
You control Conan himself, moving screen by screen through temples, caves, and enemy camps. Your main goal is to rescue a princess, which means fighting cultists, snakes, and undead with a sword or a bow. You also push blocks and statues to solve simple puzzles or uncover hidden passages. The game moves at a deliberate pace; combat is weighty, and mistakes are punished quickly. It feels like a grim, hands-on trek through a world that doesn’t want you to succeed.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
