Game Overview

I first encountered Conway's Game of Life on a compilation of MS-DOS Classic Games, though I don't recall the exact publisher. It was one of those quiet, cerebral programs that felt right at home on a beige desktop computer, more of a digital sandbox than a traditional game. You didn't play against an opponent or for a high score; you just set things in motion and observed.

You begin by placing live cells on a grid using the keyboard, then initiate the simulation. The game follows strict rules: cells with too few neighbors die of loneliness, overcrowded cells also perish, and empty spaces with exactly three neighbors spring to life. Your only objective is to design or discover stable patterns, oscillators, or gliders that travel across the screen. The pacing is entirely in your hands, from patient tinkering to rapid iteration. It feels less like playing a game and more like conducting a slow, unpredictable experiment in emergent behavior.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
