Game Overview

Crossfire came out in 1991 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games collection, developed by Smilebit. It was one of those straightforward action games from the era, built for quick sessions and testing your reflexes rather than telling a deep story. You loaded it up from a command prompt, and it ran without much fuss, fitting right in with the other shareware and budget titles of the time.

You control a small, nimble ship viewed from above, navigating through a series of single-screen arenas. Your main objective is to survive wave after wave of enemies that pour in from the edges of the screen, shooting them down while dodging their return fire. The signature mechanics include screen-by-screen progression, where clearing all enemies in one area lets you advance to the next, and a risk-reward system where collecting power-ups dropped by certain foes temporarily boosts your firepower. The pacing is relentless; the difficulty spikes quickly, demanding sharp movements and fast decision-making. It feels like a constant, tense scramble where every mistake costs you a life.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
