Cruis'n Exotica came out for the Game Boy Color in 2000, developed by Software Creations and published by Midway. It was part of that wave of arcade ports trying to capture a bit of that big cabinet energy on a small, portable screen. The hardware had its limits, but it was impressive to see a racing game with this much ambition on the system.
You control a selection of exaggerated cars, racing through fantastical tracks set in locations like Mars or a dinosaur-filled jungle. The main goal is straightforward: win races to earn credits, which you use to unlock faster, more outlandish vehicles. A couple of its signature mechanics include performing stunts, like wheelies and crash tricks, to earn turbo boosts, and navigating the game's split-screen presentation that mimics the arcade's dual perspective. The pacing is quick, the difficulty can spike on later courses, and it generally feels like a chaotic, slightly janky but earnest attempt to bring arcade spectacle into your hands.
