Dark Adventure came out in 1992 as an arcade cabinet release from Arcade Studios. It was part of that wave of side-scrolling beat 'em ups that filled arcades in the early 90s, offering a familiar but distinct flavor compared to titles like Golden Axe or Knights of the Round. The cabinet art showed a warrior and a gunslinger back to back, which pretty much told you everything you needed to know before you dropped a quarter in.

You pick one of two characters: a warrior with a whip or a gunslinger with a pistol. Your goal is to fight through screen after screen of monsters, from minotaurs to giant spiders, clearing each area before moving on. The main mechanics are your basic attack, a screen-clearing special move that costs health, and the ability to pick up and throw dynamite found in breakable objects. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty is relentless, especially when enemies swarm from both sides. It feels chaotic and immediate, especially with a friend jammed into the cabinet next to you.
