Dragon Ball Z: Gokuu Gekitouden is that scrappy little Game Boy fighter you probably missed back in the day—but it’s way more fun than it has any right to be. You pick your favorite Z-fighter (obviously Goku first, let’s be real), and suddenly you’re chaining basic punches into a full-blown Kamehameha like it’s second nature. The sprites are tiny, but Vegeta’s smug face still comes through perfectly when he’s charging a Galick Gun.

What surprised me was how much strategy sneaks in—dodging at the right moment to build energy for transformations, or baiting Frieza into wasting his death beam. It’s got that classic DBZ escalation where fights start with awkward jabs and end with screen-filling super moves. Yeah, the animations are simpler than later console games, but there’s something satisfying about landing a perfect combo on a school bus ride with just three buttons to work with.

Still holds up if you’re into retro fighters or just want to throw a Spirit Bomb during your lunch break.
