Dragon Quest IX on the DS is one of those RPGs that just sticks with you. You start as a fallen guardian angel—yeah, an actual angel—and have to rebuild your wings by helping people across this massive, colorful world. The job system is fantastic; you can switch between classes like minstrel, warrior, or mage anytime, and the gear actually shows up on your character, which is weirdly satisfying.

What really got me was the little things—random villagers with quirky problems, hidden treasure maps that lead to brutal dungeons, and that classic turn-based combat with just enough tweaks to keep it from feeling stale. The multiplayer was ahead of its time too, letting friends drop into your world as guest heroes. It’s got that old-school charm but with enough polish to make it feel fresh even now.

Just don’t expect to put it down quickly. One “quick” side quest somehow always turns into three hours of grinding for better boots.
