Dragons Lair on the NES, released in 1992 by Motivetime, was a strange and often frustrating attempt to bring the arcade laser disc game home. It arrived late in the console's life, a time when players expected more than just a visual spectacle from their cartridges.
You control the knight Dirk the Daring, guiding him through a treacherous castle to rescue Princess Daphne from the dragon Singe. The game plays out screen by screen; each new room presents a deadly trap or enemy, and you must input the correct directional or action command within a very short time limit to survive. Failure means a quick, often comical death animation, resetting you to try again. The entire experience is a memorization puzzle disguised as an action game, demanding perfect timing and recall of every sequence. It feels less like a heroic quest and more like repeatedly bashing your head against a very pretty, very unforgiving wall.
