Drakkhen came out for the Super Nintendo in 1991, developed and published by Infogrames. It was one of the earlier RPGs on the system, arriving before many of the more polished titles that would later define the genre on the console. You control a party of four characters, moving screen by screen across a vast, non-linear landscape. Your main goal is to defeat the four dragon-like Drakkhen lords, but getting there involves navigating cryptic conversations with NPCs, engaging in first-person combat that feels detached and unpredictable, and delving into maze-like dungeons. The pacing is slow, and the difficulty can be unforgiving, with sudden enemy encounters and minimal guidance. Playing Drakkhen feels like wandering through a strange, half-understood dream where every step holds potential danger or discovery.
