Excitebike came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1984, developed by Nintendo and Hudson Soft. You control a motocross rider racing against the clock and computer opponents on side-scrolling tracks filled with jumps and obstacles. The main goal is to finish each course as fast as possible without overheating your engine. Key mechanics include leaning forward or backward in mid-air to control landings, and managing your bike's temperature by avoiding excessive acceleration. The game moves at a brisk pace, and mistakes are punishing; a crash or engine overheat costs precious seconds. It feels tactile and immediate, with every bump and landing under your direct influence.
