You start Eye of the Beholder with a party of four adventurers—fighters, mages, clerics, the usual—getting shoved into Waterdeep’s sewers on some vague noble’s orders. Then, of course, the ceiling caves in behind you. Classic.

What follows is a proper old-school dungeon crawl: first-person perspective, grid-based movement, and that satisfyingly clunky AD&D 2nd Edition ruleset. Combat’s real-time but feels tactical—you’re frantically clicking to swing swords or fling spells while trying not to back into a spike trap. The interface takes some getting used to (good luck figuring out spellcasting at first), but once it clicks, there’s something weirdly cozy about mapping the dungeons on graph paper like it’s 1991.

Monsters lurk around every corner, from goblins to gelatinous cubes, and the puzzles are just the right mix of "aha!" and "wait, how was I supposed to know that?" If you’ve played Dungeon Master, it’ll feel familiar, but the D&D flavor gives it its own charm. Just don’t expect hand-holding—this one’s happy to let you wander into certain death.

Still, there’s a real thrill when your fighter finally lands that critical hit or your mage remembers the right spell just in time. It’s unforgiving, but in that way where every small victory feels earned.
