You start Eye of the Beholder with a party of four adventurers—fighters, mages, clerics, the usual suspects—sent into Waterdeep’s sewers to investigate something sinister. Then, of course, the exit collapses behind you. Classic dungeon crawl setup.

The first-person view makes everything feel claustrophobic in the best way. You’re clicking through dimly lit corridors, hearing monsters shuffle around corners, and fumbling with your spellbook when a pack of giant rats ambushes you. Combat’s real-time, so there’s no turn-based safety net—just frantic clicking and hoping your fighter’s sword connects before something bites your mage’s face off.

It’s got that old-school AD&D vibe, right down to the spell slots and weirdly specific inventory management. Found a key? Better hope you didn’t drop your only torch to carry it. The puzzles are satisfying without being obtuse, and stumbling into a hidden room full of loot feels like a genuine victory. Just watch out for the traps—they’re everywhere, and they hurt.

If you’ve played Dungeon Master, this’ll feel familiar, but the D&D ruleset gives it its own flavor. By the time you recruit an NPC or two, you’ll be knee-deep in skeletons and loving it.
