Family Trainer: Jogging Race came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987, developed and published by Bandai. It was part of a wave of active games that tried to get players off the couch, using the Power Pad accessory to turn living room floors into makeshift tracks.

You control a runner on screen by physically running in place on the Power Pad, which has twelve pressure-sensitive panels. The main goal is to complete a side-scrolling course, avoiding obstacles like hurdles and pits by jumping or changing lanes. The game tracks your speed based on how fast you step, and you need to maintain a steady pace to keep up; it’s easy to fall behind if you slow down. The pacing is relentless, and the controls can feel unresponsive, making simple jumps frustrating. It feels like a clumsy but earnest attempt to merge exercise and play.
