Game Overview

Okay, so Fantasy Zone on the Sega Master System is basically what happens if someone took a shooter game and dunked it in a vat of cotton candy. You’re flying this little ship called Opa-Opa—which looks like a chubby, winged egg with a face—through these dreamy pastel planets, popping enemy bases that look like they’re made of bubblegum. And yeah, you’re shooting stuff, but it’s all so… cheerful? Even the explosions burst into rainbow puffs.

What’s cool is you’re not just stuck on a set path. You can pick which enemy bases to hit first, which makes it feel less rigid than other shooters from that era. The coins you grab let you buy upgrades between stages—I always splurged on the laser first, but the homing missiles are pretty satisfying too. And that soundtrack? Pure 8-bit earworm material. It’s the kind of game where you’ll die a lot, but you won’t even care because everything’s just so darn happy.

This version’s a Japan-only release, but if you’re into retro games with personality oozing out of every pixel, it’s worth tracking down. Just don’t blame me when you start humming the music in the shower.
