Gateway came out in 1992 for MS-DOS, developed by Legend Entertainment. It was part of that wave of text-heavy adventure games that relied on typing commands and reading descriptions, back when a good story and clever puzzles could carry a game even with simple graphics.
You play as a space prospector, broke and desperate, taking risky jumps through unstable wormholes in search of salvage and artifacts. Your main goal is to survive long enough to pay off your debts, but every trip is a gamble; you might find valuable cargo or end up stranded with low fuel and failing life support. The game plays out through parser commands, screen by screen exploration of derelict ships and alien environments, and managing your ship's resources between each jump. It moves at a deliberate pace, and the difficulty comes from the constant risk of random misfortune and the need to think through environmental puzzles. It feels tense and immersive, like every choice could be your last.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
