Game Overview

Fullmetal Alchemist: Trading Card Game, also known as XenoPhobia, came out on the Nintendo DS in 2007, published by Destineer. It was one of those mid-2000s DS games that tried to bring a niche hobby, in this case physical card games, onto the handheld. It doesn't try to be a big, flashy adventure; it's just a straightforward digital version of the FMA card game, which was a nice, quiet alternative to the more common RPGs and platformers on the system.

You build a deck from various characters and alchemy cards, then take it into turn-based battles against AI opponents. The main goal is to reduce your opponent's life points to zero by playing character cards to attack and using alchemy cards for special effects, like direct damage or healing. Key mechanics include paying energy costs to play your cards and setting up combos between your characters' abilities and your alchemical actions. The pacing is methodical, asking you to think a few moves ahead rather than just playing your strongest card each turn. It feels like solving a puzzle with each match, especially when you pull off a clever chain of attacks that your opponent didn't see coming.
