Game Overview

Gegege no Kitarou - Fukkatsu! Tenma Daiou came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1993, developed and published by Bandai. It was part of that wave of licensed games based on popular anime and manga, common on the SNES, though this one stayed in Japan. The game draws from the spooky, folkloric world of Shigeru Mizuki's creations, offering an action platformer that feels very much of its era.

You control Kitarou, moving through side scrolling stages set in haunted villages and forests. Your main goal is to defeat yokai and stop the resurrection of the demon king Tenma. You attack enemies by throwing your detached hair needle or using your geta sandal in close range. The game features screen by screen exploration, with some hidden paths and occasional light puzzle solving. It can be challenging, with enemy patterns that require quick reactions and careful jumps. Playing it feels like stepping into a classic episode of the series, with all its weird charm and occasional frustration intact.
