Game Overview

Genso Suikoden: Tsumugareshi Hyakunen no Toki is one of those PSP gems that flew under the radar—probably because it never left Japan. You start as a kid hearing bedtime stories about ancient monsters called the Teras Pharma, which naturally makes you grow up wanting to swing a sword. Then, after a run-in with some nasty creatures, you and your friends get yeeted back in time by a mysterious guy named Xephon. Classic JRPG stuff.

Combat’s turn-based with a twist—you actually see enemies on the map instead of random encounters, which is nice. You’ve got six party slots to fill, and positioning matters (front row for brawlers, back row for squishy mages). The job system’s straightforward but fun—swordsmen hit things, herbalists patch you up, and ninjas do ninja things. Oh, and characters can learn extra skills if you make them eat together enough. Friendship via shared meals—I respect that.

There’s the usual Suikoden charm of recruiting 108 characters, though only 18 actually join your party. The rest hang around your castle doing odd jobs or teaching skills. One weird quirk: towns are menu-based instead of explorable, which feels a bit dated but keeps things moving. If you’re into classic JRPGs with time travel and a splash of strategy, this one’s worth dusting off the PSP for.
