Game Overview

Ghoul School came out in 1992 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by Imagineering. It was part of that wave of late NES games that tried to push the hardware a bit further, often with mixed results. You play as a kid named Spike, who has to rescue his girlfriend from a school that's been completely overrun by monsters and undead faculty.

You control Spike through a large, multi-level school building, clearing it room by room. Your main goal is to find your girlfriend and defeat the final boss, but you'll spend most of your time fighting off zombie teachers, mummies, and other creatures using an oddball arsenal. You start with a baseball bat, but you find other weapons like a slingshot, a crossbow that shoots stakes, and even thrown sandwiches. The game is notoriously difficult, with cheap enemy placements and a lot of backtracking through similar-looking hallways. It feels like a clunky, sometimes frustrating grind, but there's a strange charm in its bizarre premise and unconventional weapon choices.
