Game Overview
Ghouls'n Ghosts on the Master System is one of those games that looks simple until you actually try to play it. You start as Arthur, this knight in clanky armor, and within seconds some zombie pops out of the ground to ruin your day. The controls feel a little stiff at first—like Arthur's wearing actual metal boots—but once you get the timing down for jumps and attacks, it clicks.
The graphics are obviously scaled back from the arcade version, but the creepy atmosphere totally holds up. Skeletons shambling through graveyards, those weird red demons that swoop at you from off-screen... it's all here. And yeah, you still have to beat the game twice to see the real ending. First time I made it to the final boss, I thought I'd won—nope, surprise armor upgrade hunt.
Honestly, half the fun is seeing how far you can get before some cheap hit kills you. The Master System version is slightly more forgiving than the arcade, but only slightly. If you enjoy games that make you earn every checkpoint, this is a great way to wreck your thumbs.
