Game Overview

Konami released Gokujyou Parodius in arcades in 1994, a time when side-scrolling shooters were still a major force in the industry. It's the third game in the Parodius series, which itself is a parody of the company's own Gradius, and it fully embraces that absurd premise. You don't find many games willing to be this silly.

You control one of several oddball characters, like a transforming Vic Viper ship with a Moai head or a penguin in a fighter jet, and your goal is simply to survive the relentless enemy onslaught across numerous stages. The core mechanics involve collecting bells to power up your ship with options, lasers, and shields, but the real signature is the bell's color cycle, which can grant temporary invincibility or a screen-clearing bomb if you grab it at the right moment. The pacing is frantic, the difficulty is punishing, and the screen is constantly filled with projectiles, giant enemy faces, and nonsensical obstacles. It feels like playing a cartoon where the only rule is that there are no rules.
