Game Overview

Golden Axe came to MS-DOS in 1989 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series, a port of Sega's arcade hit. It arrived during a time when side-scrolling beat 'em ups were a staple, and playing one on a home computer felt like a small victory, even if the graphics and sound took a hit compared to the arcade cabinet. You controlled one of three characters: the barbarian Ax Battler, the amazon Tyris Flare, or the dwarf Gilius Thunderhead, each with their own weapon and magic style.

You move from left to right, clearing screens of enemy knights, skeletons, and other fantasy foes with basic attacks and a jump strike. The main goal is to defeat the final boss, Death Adder, who has kidnapped the king and princess. Two mechanics stand out: attacking little thieves, called gnomes, to steal magic potions that fuel your screen-clearing spells, and mounting creatures like fire-breathing dragons or chicken-legged Bizarrians to turn the tide in tougher fights. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty can feel punishing, especially when enemies swarm you from both sides. It feels like a straightforward, sometimes brutal, test of reflexes and pattern recognition.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
