Game Overview

Golden Axe on MS-DOS is one of those classic side-scrolling beat 'em ups that just feels satisfying to play, even now. You pick between three characters—Ax the warrior, Gilius the dwarf, or Tyris the amazon—and each has their own weapon and magic type. Ax swings a massive sword and calls down earthquakes, Gilius zaps enemies with lightning, and Tyris burns everything with fire. The magic system’s cool because you collect potions from these little gnome guys (you literally kick them to make them drop stuff), and the more potions you grab, the stronger your spells get.

Fighting through Death Adder’s goons is straightforward but fun—club-wielding thugs, skeletons, knights—and sometimes you can steal a ride from them. The mounts are a highlight, especially the fire-breathing dragon you find later. The Cockatrice (that weird chicken-lizard thing) is kinda weak, but knocking enemies down with its tail never gets old. There’s also a duel mode where you can fight waves of enemies or even go head-to-head with a friend. It’s simple, but the combat has just enough weight to make every hit feel good.

If you’re into old-school arcade brawlers, this one’s a solid pick.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
