Gouma Reifu Den Izuna is one of those hidden DS gems that never made it outside Japan—which is a shame, because it’s got this weirdly addictive mix of dungeon crawling and action. You play as Izuna, a shrine maiden who loses her sacred artifacts and has to fight through randomly generated dungeons to get them back. The combat’s simple but punishing—if you’re not careful, enemies can wreck you in a few hits, and losing all your gear when you die is brutal (but weirdly satisfying when you finally claw your way back).
The art style’s got this rough, almost sketch-like charm, and the music sticks in your head way longer than it should. At first, I kept getting wrecked by the fox spirits on floor three, but once you figure out how to balance offense with item hoarding, it clicks. Just don’t expect hand-holding—this game loves to kick your butt before you earn your wins.
