Game Overview

Izuna 2: The Unemployed Ninja Returns came out on the Nintendo DS in 2008, developed by Ninja Studio. It was part of that era on the DS where you could find a lot of quirky, niche dungeon crawlers that weren't afraid to be a little punishing. You play as Izuna, a perpetually broke ninja who gets into trouble again, this time to rescue her kidnapped sister.

You control Izuna through a series of randomly generated dungeons, exploring them screen by screen while fighting monsters with your sword and bow. The main goal is to delve deep, find the exit on each floor, and gather the items needed to progress the story. Two signature mechanics define the experience: using talismans for magic attacks and buffs, and a brutal penalty system where you lose all your items if you die. The pacing is methodical, and the difficulty is steep, demanding careful resource management. It feels like a constant, tense gamble where every new floor could be your last.
