Game Overview

Gourmet Sentai Barayarou is this weird, charming little SNES beat-em-up where you play as food-themed superheroes beating up bad guys. You get three characters to choose from—a sushi chef, a tempura warrior, and this ramen guy with stretchy noodles for attacks. I went with the tempura dude first because, come on, fried food as a weapon? Yes please.

The controls are simple but satisfying—you’ve got your basic punches, a jump attack, and a screen-clearing special move that drains health (classic beat-em-up logic). The sprites are chunky and colorful, and the stages are packed with dumb little details, like enemies exploding into ingredients when you KO them. It’s not the deepest fighter out there, but there’s something hilarious about uppercutting a goon as a guy in a giant sushi roll costume.

Fair warning: the translation patch’s a bit rough in spots, but you’ll get the gist. It’s short, silly, and exactly what you’d expect from a mid-90s Japanese brawler about food warriors. Worth a play if you dig obscure SNES oddities.
