Game Overview

Gourmet Sentai Barayarou is a Japan-only Super Nintendo beat-em-up from 1993, developed by Irem. It never saw an official release outside its home country, but the incomplete fan translation by Aeon Genesis offers a glimpse into a game that is both bizarre and very much of its era, with large character sprites and a food-themed premise that stands out even among the SNES library's many oddities.

You control one of three food-themed heroes, Sushi, Tempura, or Ramen, each with their own basic and special attacks. The goal is to fight through side-scrolling stages, defeating waves of enemy food monsters and humanoid chefs. Signature mechanics include picking up defeated foes who then burst into collectible ingredients, and using those ingredients to cook special dishes that restore health. The pacing is brisk, and the difficulty feels typical for the genre, with occasional cheap hits from off-screen enemies. It feels like a silly, chaotic kitchen brawl with just enough strategy in item collection to keep things interesting.
