Game Overview

I picked up Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars on the PlayStation Portable back in 2009, a time when handhelds were really hitting their stride. Rockstar Leeds and Rockstar Games put this one out, and it felt like a proper throwback to the series' roots, but built for on-the-go play. It didn't try to be the biggest or flashiest GTA; it just delivered a tight, focused experience that worked perfectly on the PSP.

You play as Huang Lee, a young gangster trying to reclaim his family's honor while navigating the underworld of Liberty City. The main goal involves working your way up the criminal ladder, completing missions for various factions, and eventually uncovering the truth behind your father's murder. Signature mechanics include drug dealing, where you buy low and sell high across different neighborhoods, and a touch-based minigame for hotwiring cars that actually made use of the PSP's controls. The pacing is brisk, missions are short and varied, and the difficulty feels fair but never forgiving. Driving through the city's districts, causing chaos, and managing your illicit business on the fly gives the whole game a tense, engaging rhythm that keeps you coming back.
