Game Overview

Great Football on the Sega Master System is exactly what it sounds like—a no-frills American football game where you pick a team (Bombers, Sharks, or one of the other made-up squads) and try to outscore the CPU. The twist? In single-player, you only play offense—no defense, which feels weird at first. The AI starts with a lead, so you’re always scrambling to catch up, calling plays from a decent selection of runs, passes, and special teams moves.

Two-player mode is where it gets fun, though. Suddenly, you’re calling defensive plays too, trying to intercept passes or force safeties while your friend curses at the screen. The graphics are basic, and the playbook isn’t deep, but there’s something satisfying about grinding out a last-minute touchdown with the Bucks. Just don’t expect Madden—this is pure late-80s arcade football.
