Great Football came out for the Sega Master System in 1987, developed and published by Sega. It was one of the early football games on the system, arriving at a time when sports titles were still figuring out how to translate the complexity of the sport into something playable on an 8-bit console. The graphics were simple, the field was small, and the rules were streamlined, but it offered a straightforward take on the sport when options were still fairly limited.

You control a team of eleven players, moving the quarterback to pass or hand off the ball to a running back. The main objective is to outscore the computer opponent by driving down the field and scoring touchdowns. The game uses a play-calling system where you select from a handful of offensive plays before each down; there is no defensive play, you simply try to stop the AI with your positioning. The pacing is fast, almost frantic, because the field is short and turnovers happen frequently. It feels like a stripped-down, chaotic version of football where a single broken play can completely change the game.
