Game Overview

H.A.T.E. came out on the Amiga in 1989 from Gremlin Graphics and Vortex Software. It was part of that wave of action games that really tried to push what the hardware could do, with detailed graphics and smooth scrolling that felt impressive at the time. You were either flying a gunship or driving a tank, and the whole game was built around switching between those two modes to handle different threats.

You control a pilot tasked with destroying an alien mothership by fighting through thirty hostile levels. The core of the game is switching between your air and ground vehicles on the fly; the gunship handles airborne enemies while the tank deals with ground targets. Your main goal is to collect a specific number of plasma crystals in each stage to unlock the exit, acting as a kind of progress gate. The difficulty is pretty relentless, with enemies swarming from all directions, and the diagonal scrolling means threats can come from any angle. It feels like a constant, tense juggling act between movement, weapon fire, and managing your two very different machines.
