I first played Heroes of Might and Magic II on the Game Boy Color back in 2000, a portable version of the PC strategy game developed by New World Computing and published by The 3DO Company. It was one of the more ambitious attempts to bring a complex, turn-based experience to a handheld at the time, fitting right in with an era when developers were testing the limits of what those small cartridges could hold.

You control a hero who explores the map screen by screen, recruiting creatures for your army, gathering resources, and capturing towns to build up your forces. The main goal is to defeat enemy heroes and conquer their castles through tactical, turn-based combat on a grid. You manage your hero’s movement carefully, collect artifacts to boost their stats, and engage in battles where positioning and unit choice matter a great deal. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty can be steep if you expand too quickly. It feels satisfying to outmaneuver opponents and slowly dominate the map with a well-crafted strategy.
