Game Overview

Heroes of Might and Magic II: Gold is one of those games that just sticks with you—even years later, I can still hum the tavern music. You start off picking a side in this messy royal feud, and suddenly you're knee-deep in turn-based battles, scouting fog-covered maps, and desperately trying to remember if griffins or hydras were the better mid-game unit.

The Gold edition bundles the original and its expansion, so there's a ridiculous amount of content. One minute you're carefully building up your castle's mage guild, the next you're sending a lone hero on a suicide mission to grab that suspiciously unguarded treasure. The pixel art has aged beautifully, and the combat—with rows of creatures clashing in that side-view battlefield—feels surprisingly tense for something so chess-like.

Fair warning: losing a high-level hero to a pack of wandering vampires hurts way more than it should. But that's part of the charm.
