Hopping Mappy came out in 1986 as an arcade game from Namco, a follow-up to the original Mappy but with a much different feel. It arrived during a time when platformers were really starting to define themselves, but this one wasn't about running and jumping in the usual way. Instead, it leaned into a kind of bouncy, unpredictable movement that made it stand out, even if it never became a huge hit.

You control Mappy, a mouse police officer on a pogo stick, hopping across disappearing platforms to collect treasures while avoiding cats. The main goal is to grab all eight treasures in each stage before the cats catch you or you fall through the gaps. Key mechanics include bouncing on springboards to reach higher areas, timing your hops carefully as tiles vanish after you step on them, and dealing with bonus stages that suddenly change the rules. The pacing is fast and a little frantic, with the cats becoming more aggressive as you progress. It feels both silly and strangely satisfying when you pull off a tricky series of hops just in time.
