Game Overview

Indy 500 on the Atari 2600 is one of those old-school racers that somehow makes a top-down view feel intense. You’ve got 60 seconds to squeeze in as many laps as possible in single-player, or go head-to-head with a friend in a 25-lap showdown. The tracks are simple but surprisingly tricky—especially when you switch to ice race mode and your car slides around like it’s on butter.

My favorite part? The weird little game variations. Tag turns it into a chaotic chase where you’re either running or hunting, and crash ’n score is basically demolition derby with moving targets. It’s the kind of game where you’ll argue with your friend about who “totally meant to do that” after a last-second spinout. The controls take a second to get used to, but once you do, it’s pure arcade racing chaos.

Honestly, it’s more fun than it has any right to be for a game this old.
