International Rally on the Game Boy Color is one of those racers that feels simple at first—just pick one of the 14 cars and hit the dirt—but gets deeper once you realize how much tinkering matters. The cars handle differently right away; some grip the road like they’re glued to it, while others slide around like they’re on ice. And you’ll need that control, because the 20 courses throw everything at you, from tight mountain passes to muddy stretches that’ll spin you out if you’re not careful.

What I like is how you’re always tweaking something between races. Upgrading your engine or swapping tires for the next track’s weather actually makes a noticeable difference—until everything starts wearing down halfway through the tournament, and suddenly you’re nursing a clunker just to the finish line. Playing against a friend in duel mode is chaotic fun, but the time trials are where I kept coming back, trying to shave off half a second.
